Top 10 Most Followed Accounts on X/Twitter


X/Twitter is a social media platform used to share text posts, images, and interact with other users on the site. The platform was originally called Twitter, but since Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the platform was rebranded into X in 2023. The future of X was heavily debated because of the rebrand but a part of what keeps the platform going are the popular accounts that make a lot of noise. This article will list such accounts, in the top 10 most followed accounts on the X/Twitter list. 

1. Elon Musk

Elon Musk currently stands in the first position in the top 10 most followed accounts on X/Twitter. As of September 2024, Musk has amassed over 197 million followers on X. Known as the world’s richest man, Musk has multiple titles under his belt including being the owner of X. Elon Musk was the reason behind Twitter’s whole rebrand into X. Besides being involved in X, Musk is also the founder of several companies such as SpaceX, X Corp., xAI, The Boring Company and more. Elon Musk is also the CEO of several companies, most famously Tesla, Inc. and SpaceX.

2. Barack Obama

Barack Obama, the former President of the United States of America is the second most followed account on X/Twitter. He was the 44th US President and was elected twice. He served his presidential term from 20/01/2009 to 20/01/2017. Obama has over an impressive 131 million followers on his X account where he usually posts about politics or snippets from his personal life. He joined the platform in March 2007 and he is also the most-followed politician on X/Twitter.

3. Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed sportsman on X and currently stands comfortably in the third position in the top 10 most followed accounts on X/Twitter. Ronaldo, who joined the platform in 2010, gained around 113 million followers. Ronaldo is a professional football player from Portugal and he currently plays for AL-Nassr FC as a captain and forward. In addition, he also plays forward and is the captain of the Portugal National Football Team.

4. Justin Bieber

Canadian singer, Justin Bieber is the X’s most-followed musician with more than 110 million followers on the platform. Bieber, who has been in the limelight since he was 12 has had an impressive run in the music industry. His 2010 hit single “Baby” skyrocketed Beiber to fame and ever since then, he has cemented his place in pop culture. Bieber has also won two Grammys and works mainly in the pop and R&B music genres. Besides singing, Bieber is also exceptionally talented in dancing and playing a multitude of musical instruments.

5. Rihanna

Robyn Rihanna Fenty, more popularly known by her stage name Rihanna is a singer, actress and businesswoman. The Barbadian pop icon is not only 5th position in the top 10 most followed accounts on X/Twitter but she is also the richest musician as of 2014. It has been estimated that Rihanna has a net with of around $1.4 billion. Not only is she revered for her music, but Rihanna is also the founder and owner of Fenty Beauty, a beauty brand offering a wide range of makeup, fragrance, skincare and haircare products. Rihanna’s X account has over 108 million followers since her debut on the platform in 2009. 

6. Katy Perry

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, professionally known as Katy Perry is an American singer-songwriter. Like Rihanna, Katy Perry is also considered a pop icon with a crazy amount of pop hits under her name. Her rise to fame started with her album “One of the Boys” which included hits such as I Kissed a Girl and Hot n Cold. Perry’s X account has over 106 million followers and she has been posting promotional material and posts regarding her upcoming album.

7. Narendra Modi

Narendra Damofardas Modi is India’s current Prime Minister and he has assumed office since 2014. Modi is part of the Bharatiya Janata Party and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh Party. He joined X in 2009 and since then he has accumulated over 101 million followers on X. On his account, all of his posts are political as expected. Modi is considered a controversial figure particularly because of his right-wing politics and his involvement in Rashtriya Swayamseval Sangh (RSS), a radical right-wing paramilitary organisation.

8. Taylor Swift

Taylor Alison Swift, better known by her stage name Taylor Swift, is an American singer-songwriter. Just as the pop artist mentioned in this list, Taylor Swift has made her mark in pop culture history because of her music and songwriting skills. Swift has many accolades under her name including 14 Grammy Awards. She is also the eighth most followed in the top 10 most followed accounts on the X/Twitter list. She has grown a massive following on all social media platforms and X is no exception. Swift has gained 95 million followers on X ever since she joined the platform in 2008. 

9. Donald Trump

Donald John Trump, former US President is undoubtedly a controversial figure. He assumed office from 2017 till 2021 and he is currently contesting as the Republican Party’s candidate for the 2024 Presidential Elections. Trump has over 90 million followers on X where he posts about politics. Trump’s account was suspended in 2021 because X declared his account to incite violence during the US Capitol riots. After Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, Trump’s account was reinstated but declared he would not return to the platform. Despite his declaration, Trump returned on X and has been actively posting since then. 

10. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga, also known as Stefani Joanne Angeline Germanotta is an American singer-songwriter and actress. As the fifth pop star on this list, Lady Gaga has gained over 83 million followers on X. Known for her camp and unique image and songs, Gaga has won 13 Grammys Awards and 2 Golden Globe Awards. Gaga also dabbles in the beauty industry with her beauty brand, Huas Labs. 

Winding Up

Despite the rocky journey since its rebrand, X continues to grow and it is one of the most used social media platforms in the world. X has 540 million users in 2024, a 47% increase from 2023. Additionally, there are over 237 million daily users and X’s Premium subscription service has over 650,000 users. The site receives around 6 billion monthly visits placing it in the 14th position in the most popular social media platforms in the world.
