After the platform’s ban in Brazil, X faces a fine of $1.9 million if X wants to come back to the country. So the platform could resume activities in Brazil immediately if it pays the fine.
X has already been fined $3.4 million (18.3M reais) which was paid off by Brazil freezing Starlink and X’s accounts. However, Justice Alexandre de Moraes stated that Starlink would have to let go of its appeals against the payment. Furthermore, Moraes has stated X will face a penalty. This penalty is due to X’s failure to comply for two days to suspend the misuse of the server which consequently led to X’s ban in Brazil.
X’s ban in Brazil led sites like Bluesky and Tumblr to skyrocket in new users. Brazilians were looking for alternatives to X, formally known as Twitter. The Musk-owned site lost a huge chunk of its users since the platform was removed from Brazil. Despite the ban, there were talks about X returning to the country soon.
X Faces A Fine For Platform’s Reinstatement: More background on this legal feud
This whole legal battle started because Moraes filed a lawsuit against X. Brazil has strict laws on disinformation and Moraes demanded that X remove some of the accounts of some right-wingers. Musk fought back against Moraes’ demands deeming it to be an obstruction to free speech. However, in a surprising turn of events, X blocked the accounts. The company also agreed to pay the fines levied on them and appointed a legal Brazil representative, which they failed to do in the first place.
X is backtracking on its previous statements against Moraes and Brazil as a whole. When this whole fiasco first started, X and Musk called Moraes’s demands and threats of the ban unconstitutional. However, X’s Global Government Affairs account on X stated that they respected the ‘sovereignty of countries in which we operate’.
