Wordy: Expanding Vocabulary While Watching Movies

Wordy is a newly launched app which makes learning English fun and enjoyable. This iOS app is the brainchild of Sándor Bogyó, who wanted to create an app to learn English while watching films and TV series.

There are two subscription plans for users to choose from such as the monthly $2.99 and yearly $29.99 plan. Users can transform their screen time into study time. After a user chooses which episode or movie they want to watch from the app’s library, Wordy’s AI studies the subtitles. After analysing the subtitles, the AI then takes out and each word goes through the process of lemmatization.

The app also utilises the user’s mic. The AI analyses the spoken words from the TV’s audio. This lets the language-learning app figure out which part of the episode they are in and transcribes and highlights words that could be troublesome for users to know. So a user can look at their phone for a translation of an unfamiliar word that pops up.

This app also has a summary page for every page which lets the users read each word. These words are also categorised by difficulty. Users can also save certain words to their library for later practice. They can make use of Wordy’s flashcards to make the learning process easier.

Bogyó states that the app is built with a blend of third-party AI models and propriety AI models. It makes use of TMDB for TV series and films and OpenSubtitles.com for subtitles.

Although the app is only available in English as of now, Bogyó has stated that he plans on expanding language support. Spanish will soon be integrated into Wordy around November. Additionally, German and French will also be following after Spanish integration.
