Vertical Profile Layout Undergoes Instagram Testing

Instagram is currently testing out a new vertical profile layout as users report that their square Instagram profile pictures are now replaced by a rectangle layout instead.

Adam Mosseri has talked about the current experiment in an Instagram story. He recognises the new profile layout may be annoying for users who carefully curate and ensure their posts match Instagram’s layout. He also says the ‘4 by 3 in a photo and 9 by 16 in a video’ limitations are ‘brutal’.

An Instagram spokesperson has also stated that the vertical profile layout is currently only available for a limited group of people. Community feedback will be considered before going any further with the full launch of the new layout.

The new layout might be a breath of fresh air for users who find the app’s current layout a hindrance. The Meta-owned app has also hinted at the idea of a change in aspect ratio as early as 2022. Instagram CEO, Adam Mosseri in an X post stated that the app was working on changing the platform’s aspect ratio of user’s profile grids. The new aspect ratio would introduce a square and 4.5 square format.

Instagram has recently also rolled out an increase in the amount of carousel posts on the app. The media-sharing app increased the carousel post capacity from 10 pictures and videos to 20. This capacity increase could potentially improve the user’s photo-dumping game.
