A new Spotify parental control feature is rolling out as a pilot program in select regions such as New Zealand, Denmark, and Sweden. This feature gives parents certain controls for their children aged under 13.
With the rising trend of social media sites bringing in even more parental control features, Spotify is following suit. YouTube, TikTok, Snap, and Meta contain parental control features. These features allow parents to monitor their kids' online activities. It helps them protect their child by blocking out harmful or inappropriate content that could make its way into their kid's algorithm.
After enabling this feature, parents will be allowed to manage their children's accounts on Spotify. They can thus prevent or bar their child from listening or watching inappropriate content. The parents can decide which artists, podcasts and tracks their kid listens to. This method makes it so that users do not have to use Spotify Kids, which is a far more restrictive version of Spotify.
This feature available for Premium users will be applicable for users who are under the age of 13. It is part of Spotify's Premium Family plan and it is limited to three countries as of now. Features such as adjusting Canvas playback, videos and explicit content labelling will be offered. Parents can add their child to their Family plan and click on "Add a listener aged under 13". Additionally, the music catalogue of the parents does not get mixed up with their children's music. So parents don't have to worry about their songs and tracks being mixed with their kid's music. Instead, it has been stated that Spotify's Wrapped results will be more accurate.
Although Spotify is an audio streaming platform, it still has a large library of music that could be deemed inappropriate for younger audiences.
