Meta has announced the debut of Edits, a new video editing app that will compete with ByteDance’s CapCut. This news follows the removal of CapCut from Apple’s App Store and Google Play Store owing to the current TikTok ban. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri announced the announcement on Threads, noting that the app will be available on iOS next month, followed by an Android version shortly thereafter.

Features Designed for Creators

Edits, designed with creators in mind, provide a slew of sophisticated tools to assist users in creating great films on their mobile devices. It has a high-quality camera, a dedicated inspiration tab, and an idea-tracking tab to help with the editing process. Users can also collaborate by sending draft versions to friends or collaborators. Following publication, creators can get performance insights directly on Instagram, making it easy to track interaction.

Mosseri stressed that Edits is primarily intended for creators, rather than casual video makers. He explained that the app’s purpose is to give the greatest tools for video fans, particularly as the video editing landscape changes.

This move is consistent with Meta’s strategy of developing similar goods to address market shortages. When TikTok was prohibited in India in 2020, Meta quickly launched Instagram Reels. Similarly, in 2023, Meta launched Threads, a competitor to text-based platforms such as X. Given CapCut’s unclear future, Edits allows makers to investigate an alternate video editing program.

The app’s emphasis on professional-level tools and insights makes it a formidable competitor in the video editing arena. As Meta continues to improve, Edits may become a go-to tool for creators looking for a smooth, collaborative video editing experience.

In addition to Edits, other competitors like a16z-backed Captions are adjusting their business models to attract users. As more tools enter the market, creators will have more options for video editing, ensuring a dynamic and competitive landscape.
