FLUX.1: New AI Image Generator May Rival Midjourney

FLUX.1 is a new open-source AI image generator developed by a Germany-based company, Black Forest Labs. The founders of FLUX were former employees and engineers at Stability AI, the company behind Stable Diffusion.

The success of this new AI image generator could be credited partly to the comparisons to Midjourney, one of the leading text-to-image AI models. However, the main difference between the two AI models is that FLUX.1 is an open-source model and its ability to work on laptops with good performance.

FLUX.1: More on this AI model

FLUX.1 was co-founded by Andreas Blattmann, Dominik Lorenz and Robin Rombach and launched on August 1, 2024. It has been reported that FLUX utilises both diffusion and transformer methods and a 12B parameter count. FLUX.1 generates high-quality images with resolution support measuring up to 2.0 megapixels with options for different aspect ratios.

The AI model currently comes in three variants namely the Pro version, Dev and Schnell. Each version of the AI model delivers different performances and is used for different applications. The Pro and Dev versions of FLUX.1 can be used for commercial use while the Schnell version is free to use and meant for personal use.

Black Forest Labs has recently raised over $31 million in a seed funding round from investors such as General Catalyst, MatchVC and Andreessen Horowitz. The startup AI company also plans to expand its horizons by developing a text-to-video model.
