In response to the rising risk of deepfakes, Meta has developed an innovative tool for watermarking AI-generated videos. The proliferation of deepfakes has become a big worry, with fraud cases tied to them increasing by fourfold from 2023-2024. According to Sumsub, deepfakes currently makeup about 7% of all fraud, including impersonations, account takeovers, and social engineering scams.
Meta Video Seal is a new technique that helps identify AI-generated content. This watermarking method is built into current software and is open source, giving a reliable means to safeguard video authenticity. Meta has launched various watermarking programs, such as Watermark Anything and Audio Seal, to address this issue.
Pierre Fernandez, an AI research scientist at Meta, revealed that Video Seal was developed to improve video watermarking by overcoming the limitations of prior systems. Existing technologies, such as those from DeepMind and Microsoft, have challenges with video compression, scalability, and insufficient robustness against common video changes. Meta claims Video Seal eliminates these issues by remaining resilient even when videos are cropped, blurred, or compressed.
A Game-Changing Tool
One of Video Seal’s distinguishing characteristics is the ability to incorporate concealed messages within videos, allowing for certification of their provenance. While it provides significant manipulation security, it comes at a cost in terms of watermark visibility and edit resistance. Overcompression or severe modifications may make the watermark illegible.
Adoption is the key challenge for Meta’s tool. Many developers already use proprietary solutions. To encourage widespread adoption, Meta is launching the Meta Omni Seal Bench, a public leaderboard for comparing different watermarking systems. Meta will also conduct a workshop at ICLR, a renowned AI conference, to continue the discourse about watermarking developments.
Meta expects that collaboration among researchers, developers, and the academic community can hasten the use of watermarking tools throughout the industry. The company’s purpose is to make it easier to detect and prevent the distribution of altered content online.
